Aoi Mizuno (水野 あおい) is a former idol singer born November 20, 1975 in Saitama prefecture Japan. Her real name is Yoko Okouchi (大河内 庸子).[1]

Life and Career

Aoi Mizuno started her career during the Idol Winter Era (アイドル冬の時代) of the 1990s. In 1991, she sent a cassette tape with demo song and resume to Merry-Go-Round. They didn't pick her up immediately, but put her into lessons. [2] In 1992, she started performing under her name, and doing some DJ work. And then in 1993, she debuted in the group Fairy Tail. However, the group was short lived and disbanded the same year.[3]

She made her official solo debut in 1994 at the age of 18.[4] She cites Seiko Matsuda as her childhood inspiration.[4]

On On February 13, 2000 she announced her retirement.[5]

May 4, 2020, she announced a return on social media citing her 20th anniversary of her retirement.[6] She returned to performing March 20, 2021.[7]

Influence/Legacy

Aoi Mizuno wore MILK and other early lolita brands as well as pieces she designed while performing.[8][4] She was known for her twin tail hair style, and her stage costumes.[4]

Unlike many other musicians of the time, she did lots of small appearances, in-store events, sold her CDs in person, and interacted a lot with fans. She is often seen as the forerunner of the modern 'live idol' model, and younger idols cite her as their inspiration.[4]
