Avant Gauche was an English-language website created by a UK lolita named Charlotte.[1] It contained resources like a list of links to lolita websites / shops and a gallery of images that were scanned from the Gothic & Lolita Bible and other publications. The avantgauche.co.uk url was established in 2003. There was also a matching Livejournal created 8 February 2003, but populated with content starting in March 2006[1] which is still online today.[2]
History
The site initially launched with a list of links which was hosted on a different domain. [3][4] The links page originally credited the defunct Luscious Dilletante Site, and indicated that the list from that site had been used as the base list.[4][5] A gallery was added in late 2003[6] and a list of books an magazines was added in early 2004.[7]
The galleries were organized by brand, and mostly were individual images cropped out of larger pages. These galleries were widely cited on EGL as image references for years.[8][9][10]
The site would also add a list of books and articles[11] and a fairly extensive list of loliable/lolita patterns.[12]
The site shut down around new years 2016, with this goodbye message:
I always think you should do something significant on New Years Eve so I'm closing this site down. It hasn't been update properly for more than five years and I haven't worn Lolita for longer than that. So it's time to say goodbye and godspeed[13]
