Maki (Makiko Asano) is one of the designers for Angelic Pretty[1]. She started in 2003.[1]
As a child, Maki loved to draw, and enjoyed doodling princesses and fairy tale images. Some of her childhood favorites were Cinderella, Marina (The little Mermaid), and Snow White. [2]
Maki discovered Pretty around the age of 14 when she was in junior high school. She used a bag she bought at “Pretty” all throughout her school career. Even though it was just a simple white bag, she loved it and used it until it was totally worn out.[2] She started making her own clothing when she was 15 because she was a student with no money and she found she enjoyed it a lot. However, she had her heart set on becoming an illustrator. [1]
When she was in vocational school, she visited Pretty often, and one day she saw an "Illustrator Wanted" sign in the store window. She sent in an application even though they required the applicants to be over 20 and not a student, and begged for them to please look at her application. The company president agreed to look at her illustrations and really liked them, and the rest is history. She said in an interview that she was so happy and touched by the whole thing that she still remembers that feeling to this day.[2]
In a 2013 interview, Maki explained that she mainly does illustrations for the clothing prints, and sometimes she also designs the matching accessories and such that are associated with a print series. She also designs bags, [2] socks, and also picks fabric and thread[3].
