Salopette (サロペット) is a loan word from french, which essentially translates to "overalls" in English. In Lolita Fashion, the term salopette covers a range of items. The primary definition for lolita, however, is a loose-fitting, casual, short skirt attached to an overall-bib style bodice, frequently with adjustable straps.

For the purposes of Lolibrary, if the item name contains サロペット, we typically translate this to Salopette. We also may normalize names if the physical appearance of the item matches the definition of what the average lolita believes to be a salopette, even if the item was named "Dress" in the original language.

History

The oldest salopettes in lolibrary are from Alice and The Pirates in 2006. These salopettes (and they were specifically called salopettes, the term was just converted into Japanese characters: サロペット / Saropetto ) are basically long shorts / shorter pants with a high waist and straps and in some cases a ruffle flap at the waist. A very similar piece was put out by Metamorphose the year before (2005) and simply labeled as a pair of pants. While the name salopette was used for several items in this time period, they are not representative of what the word has come to mean.

In 2007, we see a small number of high waist skirts with straps being labeled as salopettes, including one from Jane Marple which has a traditional overalls bib. 2008 brings us 2 items from Metamorphose which are named ロペットジャンパースカート (salopette JSK) which is more in line with the modern salopette

2009 brought us a variety of pastel shorts and miniskirt styled pieces, including some transitional pieces like Angelic Pretty's where there were button-on top pieces reminiscent of older apron skirts that came with both shorts and a skirt that could be layered or worn individually. This also kicked off a boom in sweet lolita styled salopettes from Angelic Pretty and Baby which influenced the release of similar pieces from indie brands in a trend that has continued now for over a decade. It is speculated that these pieces were influenced by Fairy-kei fashion and similar pieces from brands like SPANK! and Nile Perch.
