ALGONQUINS (アルゴンキン) is a Japanese visual-kei and punk lolita brand. It is well-known in the Japanese gothic and punk scene and was often seen in youth magazines.

Concept

ALGONQUINS describes their brand as:[1]

ALGONQUINS ADDICTION[4]

ALGONQUINS describes their ALGONQUINS ADDICTION product line:

ALGONQUINS ADDICTION

English Translation[4]: "The meaning behind ALGONQUINS ADDICTION, from the etymology of "addiction", is that after you first experience it, you will not be satisfied with anything else. [Brand items] will have an expensive design and wrap a "HARD" atmosphere into a gorgeous manner while never losing their cute impression, all while forming high-quality products. Aiming for a women's fashion who won't forget the playfulness that can only be found here... In that place, there is the aroma of the rich essence extracted from ALGONQUINS."

History

ALGONQUINS was established in 1987 under the concept of combining clothes and ideas freely without any regard for nationality or gender.[5] The brand was initially inspired by a cultural story[5] from the Omàmìwininìwag (Algonquin)[6] who are Indigenous to the lands occupied by the settler colony of Canada[7]. Subsequently, the brand formed their main concept and named it after the anglicized name of this Indigenous nation.[5] According to the timeline in the book Gothic Lolita & Punk Brand Book, Vol. 2 (2005), a two-headed deity is mentioned[5], but it is not known whose story they were inspired by.

Four shops opened in 2001, and it was clear that their attitude of "freedom and individuality" was popular with consumers. By 2005 they had 15 stores.[5]

In March of 2019, the parent company of ALGONQUINS, (A-MISH Co. Ltd) filed for bankruptcy.[8]

In June of 2020, ALGONQUINS announced that they would be re-opening.[9]
