Alice Holic is a website and mobile app run by WunderWelt that describes itself as a Kawaii Fashion Social Network. The website can be used in English, Japanese or Chinese. The site operates similar to a Daily Lolita or Closet of Frills type of outfit sharing community with an Instagram-style post format. Posts can contain one or more photo of a coord and can be tagged with various tags like the brand, colors, etc. While you can enter any tag you want, a list of popular tags is posted on some pages, so a post will be seen more if it uses the existing tags.
History
Alice Holic was founded by WunderWelt as a phone app on July 1st 2016.[1] On July 27th, 2016 WunderWelt tweeted that the app had reached 1,000 downloads and they gave away 1,500 WunderWelt points in a contest to celebrate.[2] A website version was released in the summer of 2017.[3]
In September of 2017 they added the ability to add more than one photo per post,[4] and in October of 2017 they started a promotion where the photo with the most likes would get 5000 free WunderWelt points every month.[5] Initially, posts entered in contests could also be included in the count, but in March of 2018, they made coord contest photos ineligible for the top monthly post status.[6] As of May 2023, no clear announcement has been made about if this contest has ended.
In November of 2017, they asked users to send in events so they could create a meetup calendar. [7] A small number of larger events were added, mostly in Japan over 2017 and 2018.[8] The events don't vanish after they end, so you can still see the older event listings.
In May of 2018 they added a new 'collections' feature which allows users to create folders to sort their coords into. You can also use this like a wardrobe sorting tool and make folders for things like 'blouses' and 'jsks' and upload images directly into those folders. Images uploaded into those folders wouldn't show in the main timeline feed of new posts. They also changed how likes and favorites were stored at this time.[9]
While the site is still online and can still be used, it doesn't appear to be particularly active. As of May 2023, the newest 24 posts shown on the homepage include images posted back in April of 2022, over a year ago. Despite being on the homepage for a year, the most popular photo on the front page only has 6 likes indicating that very few people are using the site to even interact with the posted content. The popular posts section is also empty suggesting no posts have gotten enough interaction to break past the minimum threshold.[10] While the Android app is still listed on their site, clicking the link on an Android phone throws an error and the app doesn't come up in an app store search as of May 2023. The site's Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr accounts all seem to have been removed as well.
Themed Coord Contests
They hosted a few different themed coord contests including a Christmas theme in December 2017[11], and a Valentine's contest in January/February 2018[12]. The winners of the Valentine's contest were レニピピ, Sugar Nyo and Jasmin Louise Darnell.[13] After this they had a Harajuku coord contest, and the winners were 月刊少女千代喵, レニピピ and 銀鳥伊菲_.[14]
Controversy
The app's terms of service allowed WunderWelt to use any photos that were submitted, so there was some perception in the community that WunderWelt's motivation behind creating the app was to generate coord photos they could use on the WunderWelt site to promote the site.[15]
