Putumayo (プトマヨ) is a Japanese lolita brand known for their punk-inspired releases and collaborations with popular media.
Concept
Putumayo describes their brand as follows:
PUTUMAYO is a pioneer and epitome of the Harajuku Street Fashion scene. Debuting in 1990 the brand concept of “Cuteness mixed with Poison” has been expanding Harajuku Fashion worldwide for over 25 years! This spirit of fun is the inspiration behind all designs. With a decisive sector of PUTUMAYO sales being international! They use universal designs, icons and motifs to fuse the essence of Harajuku Street Fashion with globally nostalgic emotions.
Sub-Labels
Aguglieria (アグリエリア)
Putumayo's "older sister" line with items aimed at a slightly older target audience than Putumayo, with a brand concept of "being able to enjoy the fashion you love even after you've become an adult".[1][2] A standalone shop was opened in Harajuku in November 2005[2][3] and a standalone website was also opened.[4] In April 2006 the brand name was changed to Putumayo lay Aguglieria. By March 2007, the Aguglieria web shop was closed and Aguglieria items were being sold alongside Putumayo items on Putumayo's web shop.
History
In collaboration with Laforet Harajuku Co., LTD.[5], Hyper Hyper Co., LTD. (株式会社ハイパーハイパー) was established April, 1987 as a subsidiary of Gim Co., LTD. (株式会社ジム).[6][7] In 1990, they opened their first Putumayo shop as a select shop in Laforet Harajuku.[8][6] In 1996, they launched their in-house line of fashion that combined sweetness and poison based on customer requests.[8] The Putumayo online shop followed shortly after, opening in August of 2000.[6]
In late 2017 Putumayo announced they would close with their final shop ceasing operations at the end of January 2018.[9]

Tips for Identifying Pieces
As always, we recommend searching Lolibrary first both by item number and by any relevant tags/features. If neither of these bring up the item, the following are some tips for researching the mystery item, though you are always welcome to ask for assistance in the Lolibrary Discord or the What is that dress? or EGL Research Center Facebook groups as well.
There are several things to check when trying to identify a Putumayo piece. First, look for an item number. Item numbers should be on the wash tag of most items released in the 2010s. For items released in the 2010s, the first digit of the item number is usually the last digit of the year. At least some items released in 2008 do not have item numbers on the tag.
Older items from around 2005 have item numbers on the tag that start with a two digit letter code. After the 2-digit letter code, there is a numeric code. The first digit of this numeric code typically is the year.
Items from 2005 and later list the company name as Hyper Hyper Co (phone 03-3423-7630). Early items list the company name as Gim Co., LTD (phone 03-3404-3221). The change over date is unknown. [15]
2014-2018 releases typically were listed on the webshop with their item numbers in the URL, sometimes in image filenames: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://putumayo.co.jp/*
