Seiichi Horiuchi (堀内誠一は) was a graphic designer, art direct and picture book author born in tokyo in 1932. He is known for his logo and design work for magazines like An An, Popeye & Olive and his Children's books.[1]

Life and Career

Seiichi Horiuchi started drawing at an early age, influenced by his father who was a graphic designer. When World War II broke out he was evacuated to Ishikawa Prefecture, but returned to Tokyo after the war. In 1947, while only 14 years old, he got his start at Isetan in the advertising department.[1] He atteneded and art institute and painted on the side, and in 1949 he exhibited at the Contemporary Art Exhibition where he received an Encouragement Prize.[1]

He left Isetan in 1956 to launch the Ad Center where he worked on editorial design for magazines, cosmetics advertisements and package design.[1][2]

He published his first children's book, Kuroma Blanky (くろうまブランキー), in 1958. [1]

From 1960-1961 he visited Europe and then after he returned to Japan, he worked mainly as a designer and art director for magazines and was involved in the launch of An An.[1] In 1972, the Ad Center closed.[3]

He returned to Europe from 1974-1981, with his family, where he continued to write children's books.[1] He moved back to Japan in 1981 and continue to work in graphic design / magazines until he suddenly passed away from cancer in 1987 at the age of 54.[1]

Influence/Legacy

His work on magazines like An An, Olive and Popeye shaped the branding of those magazines, and many magazines that followed them. In January 2022, an exhibition of his work was held at the Daimaru Museum in Kyoto.[1]
