Antique Beast is a gothic indie brand with a little bit of a sweet touch run by a single designer: Yuuki.

Concept

The designer explains the concept as:[1]

Antique beasT is what I want

Make it as you like,

It is my personal brand that I started to wear for those who like it.

The concept is "Dracul lolita"

Imagine the image of a vampire with lace and frills,

We will create things that you can feel the sex appeal and poison of a vampire in, even though they are sweet.

History

Antique Beast has been operating a website since at least May of 2000.[2][3][4] Even in 2000, they periodically stopped and started sales due to high sales volume.[4] In January of 2001, they shared a booth with Greedy Dolls at the Comic City In Osaka 32 convention, and in June of the same year they split a space at the Lolita exhibition spot sale in Shinsaibashi.[5][6][7] Antique Beast was featured in the Kera "My Brand" section which is inside the fan content section which allows for home-crafters and indie designers to send in photos and info about their work in volume 47 in August 2002.

Notable Figures

Yuuki Sakura - Designer.[8][9] Born December 4th, 1980, Yuuki does the general design, production, shipping, site management and everything else. She likes black clothes, but also loves fluffy sweetness and glitter. [10] Her favorite colors are black, white and red and her blood type is O.[11] In a "100 questions" meme posted by the designer in November of 2000, she said that buys clothing from h.NAOTO and BA-TSU, and reads Kera magazine.[12]

Characters & Design Motifs

Antique Beast is known for their high quality geometric detail work which creatively evokes the idea of specific animals Japan considers to be gothic (cats, bats, butterflies) via the use of abstract shapes. Specifically their Black Cat Headdress, which some people colloquially call a bat headdress. Where other brands would seem sweet or cartoonish, the precision and quality of their work gives these pieces a gothic feel that is difficult to achieve.

Locations/Sales Model

Antique Beast opens their webshop for a very short period of time (sometimes only for a few hours, sometimes for a few days). This happens roughly every 2 months and is usually announced ahead of time to their email mailing list. Items are made and mailed out about a month to a month and a half later.[9]
