The magazine launched in March 1970 as a female counterpart to the publisher's men's magazine Heibon Punch.[3][4] Initially, it was meant to be a Japanese version of the French Fashion magazine Elle, and Launched as Anan Elle Japon.[4] The magazine was named after a panda on loan to the London zoo, who was seen by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi while traveling.
