The first iteration of MIHO MATSUDA started as a shoe and clothing brand in 1997 in America Mura in response to the popularity of the shoes designer Miho Matsuda was designing for a shoe company that was also based in America Mura. The brand grew quickly expanding to almost 10 directly managed shops in 1998 before running into financial trouble and going bankrupt in 1999. [1] [2]
In 2001, the designer secured sponsorship from Kobayashi Co., Ltd. to relaunch the brand, and by the end of the year they had 3 directly managed shops: Marui One Shinjuku, Vivre Okayama, and Osaka. [2]
