Atelier Pierrot is a Japanese select shop selling indie brands as well as their own house brand which creates gothic / classic clothing. They are known for their use of corsets / corset look pieces. In the early Gothic Lolita industry, it is said that select shop Maria Theresa spread Lolita fashion in Osaka, and Atelier Pierrot spread Gothic fashion and Gothic Lolita in Tokyo.[1]

Concept

Atelier Pierrot describe themselves as follows: [2]

原宿ラフォーレに本店を構えるアパレルブランドです。

自社ブランドの他、各種ゴシック・ロリータ服、小物等を幅広くお取り扱いさせて頂くセレクトショップとなっております

[An apparel brand with its head office in Laforet, Harajuku.

In addition to our own brand, we are a select shop that handles a wide range of Gothic Lolita clothing, accessories, etc.]

Sub-Brands

Vallée Lys

In July 2019, Atelier Pierrot launched their sister brand, Vallée Lys [3], meaning "Lily-of-the-valley". When asked about the concept and inspiration for the brand, designer and CEO Ashizawa Yuko stated: “My hometown of Tateshina, Nagano, has white birch trees, mountains, valleys, and the town flower suzuran (lily of the valley). The brand’s name comes from that flower. The atmosphere created from Tateshina’s mist surrounding the mountains and the fleeting, but earnest blossom of the lily of the valley inspired me to use light airy materials to express the feeling of my hometown through clothes. I created Vallée lys to embody the feelings my hometown inspires.”[4]

Production

As of 2014, AtePie made their house brand items in Japan.[5] As of 2014, Atelier Pierrot has hosted two sample sales where they sold off the house brand samples.[5]

History

In September 1969 representative Masamichi Yamada opened Pierrot as a casual original brand and started wholesale sales in Yoyogi-Hachiman.[6] In September 1975 they opened an original shop at Harajuku Plaza (Central Apartment), which was located at Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku.[6] On October 28, 1978 Representative Kimiko Harajuku opened PIERROT as a shop at the same time as the opening of Laforet Harajuku.[6] They will celebrate their 44th anniversary in 2021 with an expansion and remodel. [7]

On April 15, 1993 the new representative Keiko Ohashi opened the select shop ATELIER PIERROT. [6] The clothing lineup at the time was mainly black. The original casual feeling disappeared and was replaced with more mainstream mode design items. [6] At this time, the shop name was also changed from Pierrot to ATELIER PIERROT. The original brand ATELIER PIERROT also started around this time. [6]

In April 2006 Yuko Ashizawa joined ATELIER PIERROT as a manager and designer. [6]

The Osaka shop location which opened in 2007 celebrated their 14th year in 2021.[7]

In June 2013 Yuko Ashizawa become the representative director.[6]

The Utsunomiya store was a joint store with Angelic Pretty called Carina e Arlequin[8], and the Osaka store was a joint store with ATELIER BOZ.[9]

In a 2014 interview at Hellocon, Yuko Ashizawa stated that the clothing brand was formed 15 years ago by Keiko Oohashi, when Yuko Ashizawa was still a student.[5]

Notable Figures

As of 2014, the brand had three designers total, and about 10 total employees.[5]

Masamichi Yamada - Representative (1st generation)[6]

Kimiko Harajuku - Representative (2nd generation)[6]

Keiko Oohashi / 大橋敬子 - Lead designer (3rd generation).[10][6]

Yuko Ashizawa / 芦澤優子 - Representative director and lead designer (4th generation).[11][6] She started designing for the brand in 2006, and she became the acting president in June 2013. [5] She said in a 2014 interview that her motivation was that there was nothing on the market exactly like what she wanted, so she decided she would make it herself. She got her start as a designer at Atelier Pierrot.[5]
