Yoh (妖) is best known for his Yoh's Monochrome World artwork which was printed in magazines like the Gothic & Lolita Bible, as well as on collaboration merchandise with several brands[1]. He also has a collaboration brand with Alice Kobayashi called Rouge Ligne.[2] His artwork features detailed linework, and often depicts lolita with gothic or creepy elements. The majority of his work is done in monochrome grayscale.

His brand concept for his artwork is "monochrome that colors the darkness of the heart"(「心の闇を彩るモノクロ」).[3]

Life and Career

For as long as he can remember, Yoh's dream was to become a manga artist.[4] Even as a child, he found that what he drew was considered strange compared to other children and he had trouble interacting with other people.[4] He attended a design preparatory school and a vocational school where he learned the foundations of drawing, but after graduating, he stopped making art and did unrelated work for a while.[4] He worked in a reptile shop, and in a warehouse.[4] Then he suddenly fell ill and was house bound for several years. During that time, all he could do was draw, so he drew everyday, while his body recovered.[4] He had an art site and was working on a simple illustration job given to him by an acquaintance. He went to a Lolita History exhibition and while there a magazine company approached him and offered him a job.[4] In a 2007 interview with the Gothic, Lolita & Punk Brand Book, he said that "[...]by destroying my body [with physical labor], I may have naturally realized that there is always a shadow behind the light which may have led to my current style".[4] He also stated in that same 2007 interview that his dream was to have a solo exhibition.[4]

In 2004, Yoh's did illustrations for Escargot Skin.[5] In 2006, he did the logo for Princess Doll, as well as some print illustrations.[4][6] In 2010, Yoh started doing the illustrations for the astrology articles in Kera magazine.[3] He also did a collaboration with Alice and the Pirates, where he did the art for the Apple Princess and Strawberry Princess series.[7][8] In volume 51 of the Gothic & Lolita Bible, he had a short comic published.[3]

His first solo exposition, "Monochrome World of Monsters ~ Underground Room of Yumekutsu ~" (「パラボリカ・ビス」にて初個展「妖のモノクロ世界〜夢蝕の地下室〜」) was held in 2012 at Yaso Gallery "Parabolica Bis".[3]

In 2016, he collaborated with h.NAOTO for their 2016SS collection Skull.[3]
