While Milk has never self-identified as lolita, and instead set out to make clothing that matched the current generation's idea of "girly", Milk's items were frequently selected by early lolita to help construct their coordinates in the lolita style, and therefore, Milk is considered to be one of the earliest lolita brands. While most lolita-specific brands evolved their offerings as the definition of lolita fashion evolved, Milk has stuck with their roots as a "girly" brand.

Today, their work continues to match current trends in "girly" clothing while incorporating romantic and retro elements and has more in common with their own work from 30 years ago than with the mainstream modern lolita look. The founders of both Shirley Temple and Jane Marple worked as designers for Milk before branching off into their own labels.

Tips for Identifying Pieces

As always, we recommend searching Lolibrary first both by item number and by any relevant tags/features. If neither of these bring up the item, the following are some tips for researching the mystery item, though you are always welcome to ask for assistance in the Lolibrary Discord or What is that dress? Facebook group as well.

  • Item numbers are typically listed on items' wash tags. If it is not already listed in Lolibrary after searching by both item number and by general tagging/attributes, searching the item number directly on Google may also find you other secondhand listings in the images tab, as Google's OCR now picks up item number text from tag images.
  • Tag & Item Code Guide - MILK has cycled through a number of different tag designs over the years; as such, the appearance of the tag itself can help us narrow down the release date of an item. The item numbers of releases follow a specific pattern as well that tells us the release year as well as occasionally the item type.
