The Japan Lolita Association (JLA) is an organization that was established by Misako Aoki in 2011.[1] When the JLA first launched Misako wanted to recruit a 'Kawaii Ambassador' for each area of Japan (Hokkaido/Tohoku/Chubu/West Japan/Kyushu). [2] These Kawaii Ambassadors would be expected to host events/tea parties for their area as local event leaders.[2] To apply, you had to first join the affiliated SMS site, Loliepe.[2]

Unlike Misako, who's title of Kawaii Ambassador was an official government title, these Kawaii Ambassadors were not directly affiliated with the Japanese ministry of culture.[3]

In 2013, the JLA re-launched their website at a new url with a new more global focus.[4][5] The new site suggested that benefits of the LJA included subscribing to their e-mail magazines, getting news about tea parties, becoming a kawaii ambassador and participating in association sponsored events.[6]

Their new list of activities included:[6]

  • Disseminating Lolita news: Dissemination of lolita news through chairman Misako Aoki
  • Recruiting and appointing kawaii ambassadors from all over the world: Appointment of “Kawaii Ambassadors” to each prefecture and major cities in the world
  • Holding tea parties: Announcements and reports of events and tea ceremonies hosted by the Association
  • Recruiting and appointing Lolita brands and tea party cafes
  • Information exchange between members: Exchange information with each other on facebook, etc.
  • Recruitment and appointment of schools and educational institutions: Recruitment and appointment of schools where you can study Lolita fashion
  • Japan Lolita Test: Schedule and hold an official test sponsored by the association
  • Job requests for Misako Aoki: Let's invite the chairman, Misako Aoki, to a tea party

The re-launched site also appeared to have a partnerships with Fukuoka Omura Beauty Fashion College, VIVRE and Maison de Julietta.[6]

In 2013, the JLA hosted a survey about the JLA World Summit.[7] The summit would end up being held at Anime Matsuri in Texas, USA in April of 2015.[8][9] After the summit, one of the Canadian JLA Ambassadors posted about her experience and stated that she had been asked to put together profiles of all of the American candidates at the last moment.[10] She also confirmed that what Misako had said in the introductory speech was not a mistranslation: The American JLA Ambassador was selected by John Leigh (someone who is not a lolita), and they had specifically selected someone local to Anime Matsuri so he could work with them even though the applications had been promoted as being open to the entire United States.[10]

On June 23rd, 2015 the LJA announced that they would investigate Anime Matsuri.[11]

The Facebook page last updated in September 2019.[12] The main webpage has since gone offline.
