- August: Putumayo online shop launches.[2]
- H.naoto is founded.
- Shirley Temple launches Pink, Red and Blue label lines.[3]
- Morbid Outlook publishes 'The Japanese Fashion Experience' in English[4]
- Aoi Mizuno retires[5]
- Mika Takeuchi starts working for s-inc / H.naoto.[6]
- Indie Brand First of May is launched by designer Shion.[7]
- Closet Child launches their online shop.[8]
2001
- January: Gothic & Lolita Bible begins publication.[9]
- January: Maxicimam is founded with two lines: MA and MAM[10]
- November: Bodyline founded as a costume shop and international trade company[11]
- December: EGL Livejournal community launched by LJ user Moonfullofstars.[12]
- December: Bodyline factory opened in Shanghai, China[11]
